The Ghost Star Block is #30 in the Cluster of Star series of quilt blocks designed by Julie M. Watkins.

The Ghost Star block is so named because the focus of the block is the dark points of a light diamond surrounding a light-colored Sawtooth star with a dark center. When the blocks are sewn together, these diamond points frame the points of a dark diamond which in turn surrounds the “ghost” star – a light star with a light center.

This is downloadable PDF file containing directions to make the Ghost Star Quilt Block. General directions are provided to make a twin size quilt. Some quilting experience is recommended in order to complete the quilt.

The Ghost Star Block is #30 in the Cluster of Star series of quilt blocks designed by Julie M. Watkins.

Each block in this series has been designed using the same criteria:

  • The layout is an 8 x 8 grid of 2-inch squares.
  • The finished size of the block is 16 inches.
  • Each block contains:
    • 16 HSTS made using a light blue and a background
    • 8 HSTS made using a background and a light fabric
    • 8 HSTS made using the light fabric and a dark of that same color
  • The remaining 32 squares vary for each quilt block in the series.

Quilt Size Guide

Standard mattresses vary in thickness from 7” to 24”. Older mattresses are thinner while newer pillowtop mattresses are thicker. A 15” overhang would be fine on a bed with an older mattress. However, it would not work as well for a bed with a pillowtop mattress as it would leave about half of the mattress height exposed. When calculating length, take into consideration the distance needed to cover the height of the bed pillows if you wish your quilt to cover the pillows rather than lay under them. About 12 inches is the average except on a toddler bed, where you only need about 4 inches.
